Fighting mask spot outbreaks (a very 2020 problem)

Saturday, October 31, 2020

It is highly unlikely that you need any extra reasons to hate 2020 - but just in case you do, here's another one.

It's called 'maskne' - the new term which refers to the development of pimples and spots after wearing a mask to prevent the spread of Covid-19.

The very nature of face masks is that they’re designed to limit airflow from entering or exiting the environment, which means those skin cells that would usually be shedding throughout the day are trapped on the surface and have nowhere to go.

However, there is a way to fight back with the right skincare routine.

WHAT CAUSES MASKNE?

Before any fight, it pays to know your enemy.

According to pharmacists at Lloyds, spots caused by masks are different to normal acne (caused by hormonal changes) as it’s a direct result of a physical disruption of the skin.

The constant rubbing of material against our skin can result in micro-tears, which leads to bacteria, dirt and oil easily entering underneath the surface and clogging up pores.

Also, the humid and sticky environment a mask creates around your face, chin and nose traps moisture and can lead to blackheads, whiteheads or pimples that will vary in size depending on how infected they become.

HOW TO PREVENT MASKNE

A good cleanser is the weapon you need in your arsenal to fight maskne.

Now, more than ever, it’s important to practice proper facial hygiene. Try gently cleansing your face (especially the ‘maskne’ prone areas) in the morning and evening to make sure as much build up from the day is removed.

Remember to be gentle on your skin rather than using harsh scrubs, as the aim is to help protect your skin rather than damage it further.

Recipe for Men: Facial Cleanser is our most popular male cleanser and effectively cleans out dirt and grease without drying your skin.

The highly effective cleansing formula prepares your skin for shaving and leaves it energized, clean, and healthy looking. Crucially, its special ingredient cocktail for men reduces skin oiliness by removing excess surface oil and shrinks pore diameters to prevent bacterial attacks.

Hanz de Fuko Gentle Face Wash is also effective in preventing mask breakouts thanks to two key ingredients - aloe vera, which is a natural acne fighter, and hibiscus, which has anti-bacterial properties.

MOISTURISE FOR THE WIN

A moisturiser, when combined with a good face wash, helps to rehydrate your skin's outer layers so you look your best around the clock.

Recipe for men: SPF15 Facial Moisturizer is the perfect tool for the job here, apply liberally 30 minutes before leaving your home for maximum benefit.
